6.1 Work Systems: 2012 Baldrige Education Criteria for Performance Excellence

2011 ED 6.1 Work Systems

Text additions to this Item of the 2012 Education Criteria are highlighted in yellow below

2011 ED 6.1 Additions

Deletions from the previous Education Criteria

The "PROCESS MANAGEMENT" Category 6 title has been deleted and replaced with a new title: "OPERATIONS FOCUS".

Note: Narrowing this Category's title to an operational-only focus may be problematic for users who believe that process design, improvement, control and sustainability should be addressed with a Total perspective and inclusive of all processes. For example, the quality gurus expanded the focus of improving processes from an operational-only mindset more than 50 years ago.

Note: 18 unique Criteria questions and/or requirements have been deleted from the previous version of Item 6.1.

The following requirements in the introductory paragraph of the "OPERATIONS FOCUS" Category have been deleted:

The following requirement in the introductory paragraph of the "WORK SYSTEMS" Item has been deleted:

The following Criteria questions have been deleted from the "WORK SYSTEMS" Item:

  1. "How do your WORK SYSTEMS relate to your CORE COMPETENCIES?"

  2. "How do your WORK PROCESSES relate to your CORE COMPETENCIES?"

  3. "What are your organizationís key WORK PROCESSES?"

  4. "How do [WORK] PROCESSES contribute to delivering student VALUE?"

  5. "How do [WORK] PROCESSES contribute to delivering STAKEHOLDER VALUE?"

  6. "How do [WORK] PROCESSES contribute to delivering profitability or financial return?"

  7. "How do [WORK] PROCESSES contribute to delivering organizational success?"

  8. "How do [WORK] PROCESSES contribute to delivering SUSTAINABILITY?"

  9. "How do you determine key WORK PROCESSES requirements, incorporating input from students, as appropriate?"

  10. "How do you determine key WORK PROCESSES requirements, incorporating input from STAKEHOLDERS, as appropriate?"

  11. "How do you determine key WORK PROCESSES requirements, incorporating input from suppliers, as appropriate?"

  12. "How do you determine key WORK PROCESSES requirements, incorporating input from PARTNERS, as appropriate?"

  13. "How do you determine key WORK PROCESSES requirements, incorporating input from COLLABORATORS, as appropriate?"

  14. "What are the KEY requirements for these [WORK] PROCESSES?"

The "WORK PROCESSES" Criteria Area has been deleted from the "WORK SYSTEMS" Item:

Note: Yes, you did read correctly that the "WORK PROCESSES' Criteria area was deleted from the "WORK SYSTEMS" Item and partially relocated to the "WORK PROCESSES" Item. There can be no viable argument that It was a mistake to locate 'Work Processes' outside of the 'Work Processes' Item in the 2009 - 2010 Criteria. More importantly, this convoluted positioning appears to make a compelling argument as to why the Criteria need to be revised every year as was done until 2009. Otherwise, users are required to live with mistakes for two years which is not beneficial to the integrity of the Criteria. In case you're are wondering, some of the  incorrectly positioned "WORK PROCESSES" questions have been correctly relocated to the revised WORK PROCESSES Item.
